CENSUS GEARING UP FOR 2010 BY RECRUITING MANAGEMENT STAFF

Work on the 2010 U.S. Census is starting.

Freeholder Director Joseph H. Vicari, who led the 2000 effort for Ocean County and who will serve as liaison for the 2010 activities as well said, “Ocean County was widely recognized as being a leader in the tri-state area because it kicked-off its Census campaign early and had widespread citizen participation and support.”

“One of the reasons for our success in 2000,” Freeholder Vicari said, “was the quality of the staff that worked in the local Census office. We assisted the Census representatives in the recruitment of employees and helped them find places for testing and training. I anticipate providing that support again.”

A challenge facing the Census in staff recruitment is finding qualified individuals who are willing to work full or part time in temporary jobs that will end once the Census is completed.

Vicari said that some jobs are headquartered in Trenton or Camden, but others may be field positions or assigned to local offices when they are opened. He hopes the job opportunities may appeal to some of the county’s retirees.

“If individuals are at all interested, I encourage them to get into the job data bank early because there will be other positions opening in Ocean County in 2009. They need not accept a position at a distant location. One may become available in this area once the Census gets under way,” Vicari said.

The Census is currently accepting applications that will start in the fall of 2008 for full time, temporary management positions for Local Census Office Manager and Assistant Managers in specialized areas such as recruiting, administration, field operations, quality assurance and technology. Jobs pay from $19.25 to $29.75 an hour depending on position and geographical location.

Starting in 2009 through mid 2010 individuals for office and field staff positions will be recruited.

To apply individuals must have a valid Social Security number, pass a basic skills written test, pass a background check and for field jobs, have a valid driver’s license. Resumes should be sent to: U.S. Census Bureau, Attn: Recruiting, 1234 Market St., Suite 340, Philadelphia, PA 19107 or Philadelphia.rcc.recruiting@census.gov or by calling the toll free number 877-713-8077.
