CONSUMER AFFAIRS PROVIDES HELPFUL HINTS ON HEAT
TOMS RIVER – Ocean County wants its residents to be savvy shoppers when it comes to keeping their homes warm this
winter.
“Ocean County’s Office of Weights and Measures conducts investigations to ensure consumer confidence when
shopping in today’s marketplace,” said Freeholder Director Joseph H. Vicari, who serves as liaison to the Ocean County
Department of Consumer Affairs. “But, there are still some steps that residents can take to shop smart.”
Vicari and the Department of Consumer Affairs noted that consumers can use the following tips to protect
themselves against fraud.
When purchasing home heating oil, you should be aware that it is sold by volume in gallons.
The seller must give you a “serialized” delivery ticket showing the name and address of the buyer and seller, the
delivery date, the number of gallons and grade of the fuel delivered, and the signature of the person making the delivery.
“Following these tips will give you peace of mind and reassurance that you have received every drop that you have
paid for,” Vicari said.
In purchasing firewood, you should know that firewood is sold by a measurement known as a “cord.” A cord occupies
128 cubic feet, which measures 4 x 4 x 8.
Measure the wood before using it and always get a sales receipt indicating the seller’s name, address, telephone
number and the price, amount and kind of firewood purchased.
In the event that the firewood was delivered, be sure to write down the license number of the delivery vehicle to
have on record as well.
“Always be sure to take note of any discrepancy you may have,” Vicari said. “Documenting a problem will assist in a
further investigation if it is needed.”
Make sure you look for a reputable dealer. Paying cash for a “good deal” is not always a “good deal.”
“Remember to put safety first. Be cautious when handling heating oil and lighting any fire,” Vicari said. “A
little common sense can go a long way.”
If the problem cannot be resolved, contact the Ocean County Office of Weights and Measures at (732) 929-2166.
