- When opening a new toy, immediately discard any plastic bags or wrapping, which can cause suffocation.
- Carefully explain to the child how to use the toy safely.
- Teach children to put their toys away on a shelf or in a toy chest after playing so no one trips and falls on them.
- Look for the age appropriate labels on toys and follow the recommendations. Toys should always suit the skills and
interests of the child. Be aware of toys with small parts that could pose a choking hazard for younger children.
- Check instructions for clarity.
- Avoid toys that shoot objects that could injure eyes. Beware of toys with sharp edges or points.
- For infants and very young children, avoid toys that include long strings or cords. Cords can become wrapped around a
child’s neck and cause strangulation.
- Outdoor toys should be properly stored after use. Be aware of parts that can rust and become a hazard.
- Examine toys from time to time. Discard those toys that are damaged or have broken pieces that could be dangerous.
“By using common sense and following these safety suggestions, everyone can have a safe and enjoyable holiday season,”
said Vicari, who is also liaison to the Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs.
The continued recall of toys because of high levels of lead also continues to be a concern for parents.
